Time has value

We all share the same basic resource: time. Whenever we spend time on something, we give up something else. That is an opportunity cost.

Game currency can hold value for the same reason: players invest their time in the game. After many hours of play, the results of that time, such as items and stronger heroes, start to carry value.

Online MMORPGs with markets and trading have shown this for a long time. In South Korea, games such as Lineage, Lineage II, MapleStory and The Kingdom of the Winds have done so for more than 20 years. Their currencies, and often their items, held value long before the words Play to Earn (P2E) existed. P2E is not a new idea.

So our task is not to invent future technology. It is simpler: make good games and content that let players connect game currency with crypto safely, and that players want to spend their time in.

Not every game suits Play to Earn. A game made only for light fun, or one built around a story you finish, is a great game, but its currency rarely keeps lasting value.

What keeps an MMORPG economy alive

Korean online MMORPGs kept large in-game economies for three reasons:

  1. Competition between players and factions. When players fight over castles and power, they spend a lot of currency. Factions keep the market alive.
  2. The game does not end. Time gains value as it adds up. Seasonal resets put a limit on the value of time.
  3. A steady Earn–Burn cycle. Players earn by hunting and spend on gear and skills to face stronger enemies.

In classic MMORPGs, players “mine” items and currency by hunting. Some players want to grow fast to win in faction fights, so buying other players’ time becomes natural. That demand keeps the market going.

To stay strong, players must burn what they earn. Only then can they keep competing and find new ways to earn. Because this growth never truly ends and keeps going with updates, the value of time keeps growing. Like a real economy, the game economy keeps creating value over time.

Our mission

Our missionExplore how a protocol economy can be built inside an MMORPG, from this point of view.

Soon, most real-world assets will be tokenized, and games will be no exception.

A protocol economy is built on voluntary agreements between people. Decentralization cuts the cost of middlemen and shares value more fairly.

In games, this can mean lowering development costs with AI and automation, and letting players take on some roles that developers usually handle, such as QA, customer support or parts of game design. The extra value can then be shared between developers and players.
